The development of the Greek space industry is threatened with stagnation, despite the positive results brought by Greece’s participation in the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Microsatellite Program.

According to sources, the government does not intend to increase the funds allocated to Greece by ESA for the next three years, something that participants in the Organization usually do in order to succeed in their activities in larger programs.

So far and ahead of decisions that need to be made by the end of the month, Greece’s participation for the next three years (2026 – 2028) seems to be stagnant, at 33 million per year, the same as the previous ten years.

It should be noted that the funds allocated to the European Space Agency return to the country in the form of projects undertaken by Greek companies. This parameter, combined with the Microsatellite Program, which was financed by the Recovery Fund with 200 million euros, contributed to the significant development of the Greek space industry.

It is estimated that the development of the Greek space industry has been trapped in the long-standing lack of understanding between the competent bodies and the inability to understand issues related to technology and, in particular, space.

And yet, this is a sector with enormous prospects for the country, since it does not require investments of billions but millions of euros, while for every 1 euro invested, the economy gains 10.

The Association of Greek Space Technology and Applications Industries has 60 member companies, with a total turnover of 500 million euros in 2024, compared to 425 million in 2023, 410 million in 2022, 300 million in 2021 and 230 million euros in 2020.
