Convicted migrant smugglers claim sentences too harsh; begin hunger strike

Twenty-two convicted migrant smugglers have reportedly begun a hunger strike at a jail on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, charging that their sentences were too harsh.

The inmates are listed as Syrians, Afghans and Egyptian nationals, by several Turkish nationals also convicted for ferrying over multitudes of Mideast asylum seekers and irregular migrants from various Third World countries are not participating in the protest.

Out of the 150 inmates at the facility, roughly 80 foreign nationals have been convicted of crimes stemming from people smuggling – with practically all instances involving third country nationals landed on Greek isles from the opposite Turkish coast.
