Strong quake, 6.4 on Richter scale, shakes Zakynthos; damages reported

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was reported before 2 a.m. (local time) southwest of the Ionian island of Zakynthos, with damages reported to buildings on the isle but no injuries.

 The quake hit at 01:54(23.54 GMT) in a sea region 44 kilometers south, southwest of Zakynthos, 280 kilometers south, southwest of Athens.

The US geological institute measured the quake at 6.8 on the Richter scale.

More than 35 after-shocks were later recorded up until 8 a.m. by a geodynamic institute in Athens, the most powerful being 5.1 on the Richter scale.
