The 10 largest of the 43 remaining players in the organized retail sector accounted for the lion’s share of total turnover and net profits, specifically 91.81% of total sales.

The main characteristic of the market is also the ongoing trend of concentration, with expected acquisitions mostly by some of the 33 smaller players from the ten largest.

According to the 29th edition of Boussias Media’s “Panorama of Greek Supermarkets”, which processes the balance sheets of the 43 largest companies in the sector except Lidl Hellas, which does not publish a balance sheet, the sales of the 43 remaining “players” of organized retail amounted rose 4.38% or 548,356 euros to 13.06 billion euros in 2024, compared to 2023, recording a new historical high for the third consecutive year.

This list does not include, as mentioned above, the Lidl chain, which however, according to information, records a turnover exceeding 2 billion euros. Therefore, the total turnover of organized retail in our country exceeds 15 billion euros.

The ten top

The highest sales in the sector and at the same time the largest increase in value was recorded by Sklavenitis, whose turnover amounted to 4.651 billion euros, increased by 336.21 million euros or 7.79% compared to 2023. In second place was AB Vassilopoulos, with annual sales of 1.936 billion euros, down 1.75% compared to 2023. In third place was Metro with a sales increase of 2% and an annual turnover of 1.621 billion euros. Masoutis followed with a 5.94% increase in sales, which amounted to 1.140 billion euros compared to 1.076 billion euros in 2023, Kritikos with an increase of 10.78% and a turnover of 777.721 million euros, Pente (Galaxias) with a decrease of 3.99% and a turnover of 514.285 million euros, while the top ten was closed by Market In (418.612 million euros), Bazaar (248.378 million euros) and Chalkiadakis (239.798 million euros).
Both Chalkiadakis, however, and The Mart belong to the Sklavenitis Group, which, together with other activities, recorded a consolidated turnover of 5.560 billion euros in 2024 compared to 5.157 billion euros in 2023 (an increase of 7.81%).

It should also be noted that out of the total of 43 companies on the list, 16 recorded a decrease in turnover in 2024, while the remaining 27 moved upwards and of the ten, only two experienced the largest decrease – specifically AB Vassilopoulos and Pente S.A. – with the remaining eight recording a new increase in contrast.
