Berlin on Monday officially dashed whatever prospects for talks with Greece on the issue of WWII reparations, a day after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras again referred to the issue during a press conference in Thessaloniki.
A German government spokesman on Monday said the matter has ended for his government, legally and politically.
“There is not chance of us accepting negotiations with Greece over the issue of reparations,” Steffen Seibert said.
Speaking at the inauguration of an annual trade fair in the northern Greek city, Tsipras said the issue remains open for Athens. “As a result, we won’t leave it in some officer drawer…” he said.
Meanwhile, in reference to the timely issue of debt relief, the German new agency MNI, citing a source, said measures for the Greek debt cannot come before German federal elections next year.
