ND again cites issue of snap election

The issue of a possible snap election in recession-plagued Greece generated a tit-for-tat exchange of statements between the government and main opposition on Tuesday, during a mid-August week that is usually very lean on political news.

In reply to a comment by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who said that anyone now requesting snap elections is foolish, main opposition New Democracy spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos sardonically “welcomed” Tsipras’ “re-emergence after 15 days of summertime silence.”

According to Koumoutsakos, “Mr. Tsipras’ anxiety and irritation isn’t due to press reports but to the impasses that have amassed from his own policy.”

He also repeated that ND demands early elections in order to solve the problems created by the leftist government’s policies.

Tsipras toured Arta prefecture in northwest Greece on Tuesday, where, among others, he attended a memorial service for the victims of a wartime massacre of civilians in the village of Kommeno by occupying Nazi troops on Aug. 16, 1946.
