New Democracy’s landslide victory changing the political landscape

The new parliament will consist of eight parties, including "Spartiates" supported by jailed neo-Nazi Ilias Kasidiaris.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis scored a landslide victory in June 25 national elections with 40.5% followed by SYRIZA with 17.8%.

The new parliament will consist of eight parties, including “Spartiates” supported by jailed neo-Nazi Ilias Kasidiaris.

The difference of more than 22 points, the largest between the government and main opposition since 1974, is changing the political landscape.
Commenting on the negative outcome of the elections for SYRIZA, its leader Alexis Tsipras said that the party will make its decisions in a collective manner, and “party members will be invited to judge us all and to set out the strategy that responds to difficult conditions.” He would be the first to place himself at the judgment of party members, Tsipras added.

PASOK-Movement for Change came third with 11.9% and communist party KKE garnered 7.7%.

In fifth place, with 4.7%, is the far-right party Spartans, for which Ilias Kasidiaris, a former leader of the banned neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party who is currently in prison for leading a criminal organization, expressed his support.

It is followed by two other far-right parties: the ultra-nationalist Greek Solution of Kyriakos Velopoulos with 4.5% and the ultra-religious Niki with 3.7%.
Turnout reached only 52% causing concerns over the electoral process in case it falls below 50% in the future, undermining the democratic legitimacy of governments.
