Jailed ex-minister says he’s consenting to immediate opening of bank accounts

Jailed former finance and economy minister Yannos Papantoniou, one of the most influential Cabinet members in the Simitis governments between 1996 and 2004, on Friday said he and his spouse were consenting to the immediate opening of all their bank accounts, anywhere in the world.

Papantoniou, who was remanded in custody last week over money laundering charges, called allegations that he is attempting to delay the opening of his bank accounts as “false and dishonorable,” and aiming only to serve as a reason to justify his pre-trial incarceration.
