The keel-laying of the first two RAstar 2800-type tugboats in Elefsis confirms that the landmark agreement between ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group and MEGATUGS Salvage & Towage is now entering a phase of substantive execution.
With delivery of the first two vessels expected by the end of 2026, as part of a broader program for 20 tugboats, the project is of particular importance for efforts to strengthen Greece’s shipbuilding industry.
The presentation brought together government officials, representatives of the maritime industry, diplomatic stakeholders and shipyard employees, reflecting the significance attributed to this initiative. All participants agreed that the construction of the first two tugboats is directly linked to port safety and the modernization of ship service infrastructure.
The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, emphasized the strategic importance of the maritime sector and related professions, noting that shipping, ports, shipyards, energy and supply chains form the core for the creation of new, high-quality jobs and the development of local communities. As he stressed, maritime safety is a top priority, and the availability of modern tugboats is critical for the smooth and safe operation of ports serving passenger, commercial and naval vessels.
The Chairman and CEO of ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group, Panos Xenokostas, described the development as a milestone moment for the Elefsis Shipyards. He underlined that the program extends beyond the first two vessels to a total of 20 tugboats, adding that ONEX has taken a strategic decision to finance the production line, investing in one of the most advanced and rigorous construction processes.
As he noted, cooperation with the internationally renowned Canadian design firm Robert Allan Ltd. enables Elefsis to position itself among the leading global tugboat builders.
