Prosecutor orders probe into press leak describing distribution of foreign ministry discretionary funds

An Athens first instance prosecutor on Friday ordered a preliminary investigation into press leaks describing how “discretionary funds” are allocated by Greece’s foreign ministry.

The order came after the publication of information, purportedly regarding a ministry “slush fund”, in a popular Greek-language newsite (I-efimerida). The initial press report cited three recipients, and a total outlay of one million euros. The report also alludes to money distributed to mass media in other Balkan countries and in support of other national Orthodox Churches.

The leak was sharply criticized by the Greek prime minister’s office, whereas the Parliament President, Nikos Voutsis, also expressed his indignation, given that the leak reportedly emanated from official documents sent to his office.
