A simmering row between the leftist-rightist coalition government and the Greek subsidiary of Canadian miner Eldorado Gold continued on Tuesday, as the latter filed a petition with Greece’s highest administrative court to overrule a decision by the relevant minister not to renew a license for the Skouries site.
Hellas Gold will seek legal redress at the Council of State (CoS) to overturn a decision by Environment and Energy Minister Giorgos Stathakis not to extend, by a year, the license for the installation of electro-mechanical equipment at auxiliary and enrichment facilities at the Skouries gold mine complex – the focus of a bitter clash between anti-mining opponents in the area and the company.
The previous license expired on March 24, 2017, whereby the company duly asked for a one-year renewal. That request was rejected by Stathakis.
The mining concession awarded to Eldorado Gold subsidiary Hellas Gold is considered as the biggest industrial foreign direct investment in the country.
