Last refugees/migrants evacuated from port of Piraeus

The last Mideast war refugees and assorted other irregular migrants that had entered Greece from Turkey over the past year were evacuated on Wednesday from the port of Piraeus.

According to the harbor corps, some 400 simply left the site for destinations unknown, while 50 people accepted an offer for shelter at a refugee camp in Trikala, central Greece. Another 18 people were transported to a shelter in Viotia prefecture, north of Athens.

Up to 5,000 people had camped out at the port’s passenger terminals at the height of the refugee/migrant crisis, when thousands of people were being ferried onto a handful of Greek isles every day from the opposite Turkish coast.
