Bank deposits by households continue to drop in March 2016

Bank deposits continued to drop in Greece in March 2016, albeit at a slower rate than the previous month, February 2016.

Households withdrew some 250 million euros from Greek banks more than they deposited during the same month, with the total left in “electronic vaults” being 121,469 billion euros, of which 101.3 billion were classified as deposits by households.

The figure means that deposits in Greek banks were lower in March 2016 than in July 2015, the first month of an imposition of capital controls by the leftist Tsipras government.

Roughly 48.5 billion euros of private depositors’ funds were held in simple accounts, with the remainder, 41.2 billion euros, in clsoed interest-bearing accounts.

Corporate accounts (sans credit institutions) held 15.116 billion euros in March 2016, up 425 million euros from February, although accounts by insurance companies fell by a noteworthy 298 million euros during the same month.
