Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s message towards Ankara to immediately free two Greek servicemen being held on murky charges in the neighboring country for nearly two months – which he repeated in Athens on Thursday – generated an angry response from the Turkish side hours laters.
According to Yenisafak, Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül appeared on television and stressed that “Turkey and Turkish justice don’t take orders from anyone”.
Junker had first broached the issue with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at an EU-Turkey summit in Varna, Bulgaria last month.
While in Athens, he reiterated that “Turkey cannot claim that the two Greek soldiers are a threat for the country. They must be freed.”
