Group of Somali irregular migrants detained in western Greece; probe launched

Tempers again flared up at a temporary refugee shelter in the Katsika township, southwest of the northwest city of Ioannina, after police scattered a group of Mideast refugees that had occupied an intersection of the Egnatia motorway that passes through the area.

Fifteen people were detained after protesting refugees, mostly young men, started throwing rocks at riot police, including a Spanish woman who was identified as a volunteer with a NGO active at the shelter.

Another five military servicemen manning an army post within the shelter also fled after refugees started throwing rocks at them.

According to reports, the group demanded better living conditions.
