ND leader revisits proposal to give overseas Greeks right to vote in Greece elections

Main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday revisited a pledge made years ago by his center-right party to give overseas Greeks the right to vote in Greek national elections, a right that exists in several western countries.

Mitsotakis made the announcement days before he travels to New York City to serve as the grand marshal in the annual Greek Independence Day parade down 5th Avenue.

The previous proposal, which was made by the Karamanlis government almost a decade ago, called for ballot boxes overseas for Greek citizens who remained on election rolls in Greece.  At the time, proposal was greeted with skepticism by the mainstream opposition parties and outright hostility by the far left opposition parties.
