HEDNO: Smart network and upgraded services

The new NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies, which support the collection, management and transmission of consumption data from the 7.7 million "smart" meters, are based on international standards

The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator  (HEDNO) is advancing the digital transformation of its network, utilizing the most modern NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies, with the aim of upgrading services to consumers and continuously monitoring the network infrastructure for faster fault repair.

The new NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies, which support the collection, management and transmission of consumption data from the 7.7 million “smart” meters, are based on international standards.

Thus, every household and business that has a “smart” meter will have 96 measurements available per day (one every 15 minutes), with absolute accuracy and security. This means rationalization of charges and a better picture of consumption. In addition, this data contributes to the upgrade of HEDNO’s services to consumers, as it allows the Operator to immediately identify any outages or power thefts, inform users and proceed with restoration.

A significant advantage of NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies is that they offer wireless, reliable and secure communication for millions of remote devices. LTE networks in Greece have wide coverage even in underground or isolated areas, high levels of data and communication security and stable operation with minimal interruptions.

In the first phase of the project, HEDNO is collaborating with Nova, which provides the SIM cards placed in the meters, as well as the NB-IoT/LTE-M mobile connectivity services for data transfer. This collaboration ensures coverage throughout the Greek territory, also offering secure and encrypted data transfer, 24-hour support, and the possibility of future expansion to 5G networks and new IoT (Internet of Things) services.

HEDNO CEO Tasos Manos stated: “Following the installation of smart meters and the digitalization of lines and substations, HEDNO’s network is becoming the largest network of connected devices implemented to date in Greece.

As part of our new collaboration, special SIM cards placed in each meter are provided, as well as NB-IoT and LTE-M connection services that allow data to be transmitted securely and reliably.

In this way, we ensure that smart meters communicate smoothly with our systems, so that we can offer faster service and more ‘smart’ services.

By leveraging these technologies, HEDNO is taking a decisive step towards a more ‘smart’, sustainable and efficient energy network.

This initiative improves the consumer experience, contributes to green growth and opens up new possibilities for cooperation with the telecommunications market.”
