Papastratos at TIF: Challenges of water resources’ sustainable management

The discussion highlighted the importance of sustainable and sound management of water resources

A discussion on “Challenges for the sustainable management of water resources” was held at the Papastratos pavilion, within the framework of the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

The discussion highlighted the importance of sustainable and sound management of water resources, at a time when the climate crisis, population pressure and the water reserves quality degradation make the issue more urgent than ever.

Addressing these challenges requires the need to join forces, at both the local and national levels, in combination with the exploitation of the possibilities offered by technology and Artificial Intelligence. As highlighted during the discussion, sustainable management of water resources cannot be addressed in isolation, but requires comprehensive plans and synergies, in order to ensure the protection and rational use of a resource of vital importance for future generations.

During the discussion, the speakers referred to four main pillars: the big picture of global, European and national challenges related to water, the economic dimension of management and the need for investments in infrastructure and technology, the priorities for Greece in order to have a comprehensive strategy, as well as good practices that can serve as examples for the sustainable and responsible use of water resources.

Scoullos: The country has not been adequately prepared for the management of water resources

The Professor of Environmental Chemistry and Oceanography of the National University of Athens, Dr. Michalis Scoullos, pointed out, among other things, that: “Greece has not been adequately prepared for the management of water resources. Climate change has created irreversible phenomena for which we are responsible,” referring to the melting of ice and the continued increase in temperatures leading to reduced rainfall. “Even with the reduction in the use of fossil fuels, the ice will continue to melt, which makes the issue a matter of utmost security that rivals the issue of national security.”

Sachinis: The rational management of water resources in Attica is a strategic priority for EYDAP

The Director of Strategy and Innovation of EYDAP, Giorgos Sachinis, stated: “The rational management of water resources in Attica is a strategic priority for EYDAP. Addressing the modern challenges of water scarcity requires projects and a coordinated effort. In addition to direct infrastructure projects, EYDAP stressed the need to save and reuse water in order to create a culture of responsible consumption that will contribute to sustainable sufficiency for future generations.”
