The International Association of Dry Bulk Shipowners – INTERCARGO and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) have signed a two-year cooperation agreement to accelerate decarbonization efforts in the dry bulk shipping sector.

This sector constitutes the largest segment of the shipping industry in terms of deadweight tonnage and presents particular decarbonization challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized shipowners operating on unpredictable “tramp” routes.

The partnership leverages GCMD’s deep technical knowledge and experience in pilot projects with the operational expertise and access of INTERCARGO to its members and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with the aim of addressing critical barriers to operational implementation and wider adoption of green technologies.

Dimitris Monioudis, Chairman of the INTERCARGO Technical Committee, said: “Representing the world’s largest shipping sector, INTERCARGO is committed to making decarbonization realistic and achievable for all its members. This partnership ensures that practical and scalable technologies reach shipowners carrying the world’s most critical cargoes. By combining GCMD’s experience in pilot projects with the operational knowledge of our members and our participation in the IMO, we can accelerate progress towards decarbonization goals.”
