No decisions about shipping should be made without the involvement of the shipping industry, the president of the Union of Greek Shipowners, Melina Travlou, said addressing the Maritime Summit in Athens “Shaping the Future of Shipping.”
Shipping is the silent mediator that ensures, in the most economical way, the security of global supply chains, as well as the autonomy of countries around the world in matters of food and energy, she underlined and added:
Our industry has proven to be humanity’s savior in many critical situations where its sustainability has been tested. COVID-19, wars, geopolitical tensions, humanitarian crises, climate change. Shipping has always responded.
However, Travlou added that “despite its such tangible contribution to our daily lives, shipping remains largely invisible and forgotten, both by policymakers and the general public. The irreplaceable role of our industry is often overlooked, not for lack of appreciation, but mainly for lack of understanding. This must change, not because we seek praise, but to achieve effective policymaking.”
