Some 40 third country nationals, mostly from Pakistan and North Africa, held a sit-down protest outside one “hotspot” on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos this week to demand that deportations of irregular migrants from Greece to Turkey stop.
According to reports, Greek authorities have resumed the process of trying to distinguish between legitimate refugees fleeing war zones in the Middle East and would-be economic migrants that have joined in the flows of refugees being off-loaded on various Greek isles.
Irregular migrants are again detained, held and transferred by ferry boat to the northern port of Kavala, then briefly sheltered at pre-deportation centers for final repatriation to Turkey via the Kipi border post on the two countries’ land borders.
