Creditors adamant over expansion of Greek tax base downwards

Creditors reportedly demanded a reduction in the tax-free ceiling for income tax purposes, confirming earlier “N” reports that the “quartet” wants to expand the tax base, downwards, instead of approving Athens’ preferred option of simply again raising income in the over-30K brackets.

Annual income of 9,545 euros is not taxed at present.

“N” reported on March 2 of creditors’ preference for an expanded tax, stressing that a majority of tax returns show income of under 10,000 euros. If the “quartet” gets its way, tens of thousands of wage-earners and pensioners will be called on to contribute directly to state coffers.

Creditors’’ representatives also reportedly want the measure instituted retroactively as of Jan 1, 2016.

They were meeting on Friday with Greek FinMin Euclid Tsakalotos.
