A union representing police officers in Greece on Tuesday issued a damning statement over Sunday evening’s interrupted pro football match between PAOK Thessaloniki and AEK Athens on the former’s pitch, a match punctuated by an invasion onto the field by PAOK’s management and the club’s handgun-carrying owner.
The union, known by its Greek-language acronym of POASY, asked why PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis was arrested on the spot, after he charged the field with his bodyguards and a holster with a gun tucked on this belt.
The union asked whether the Greek-Russian investor and business enjoys some type of “preferential protection”.
Addition question raised is whether prosecutors in Thessaloniki or Greek Police’s (EL.AS) leadership will address the issue of responsibility for the incident and a lack of arrests.
