“2023 was a milestone year, a new record year for Greek tourism,” the General Secretary of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), Dimitris Fragakis, said in an interview with Naftemporiki TV.
He explained that “the performance in 2023 was really excellent. There was an increase in arrivals but mainly in revenues which reached approximately 21 billion euros on an annual basis. It was a record year in terms of revenues while the previous record was in 2019.”
Fragakis also noted that “the summer season in both 2023 and 2024 started earlier, at the beginning of March in several destinations. Another important feature is that it continues until November.”
He also referred to the fact that Athens has now established itself as a twelve-month tourist destination.
“In terms of hospitality infrastructure, many investments have been made in recent years,” he noted, adding that
“public infrastructure is significantly supported by the government.”
“There is intense movement at the level of the European Union on how our tourism will be able to adapt to the new data of climate change. The GNTO’s campaign abroad does not stop, focusing on the traditional markets of Northern Europe. Campaigns are already running in the American and Canadian markets, which are important markets for us, but we also turn to new markets such as the Indian market, China, the Arab market, Korea, and Japan,” he underlined.
