Greek January-September primary budget surplus at 5.9 billion euros; beats target

Based on the provisional data on the execution of the state budget, on a modified cash basis, for the period January - September 2023, there is a deficit in the balance of the state budget of 400 million euros against a target for a deficit of 2,704 million euros in the draft budget.

Greece recorded a central government primary budget surplus of 5.98 billion euros, twice the target, in the January-to-September period on the back of higher tax revenues, according to the Finance Ministry. Moreover, tax revenues also rose by 3.15 billion euros compared to the target totaling 45 billion euro The primary result was a surplus of 5,984 million euros, against a target for a primary surplus of 2,436 million euros and a primary surplus of 52 million euros for the same period in 2022.

In the period January – September 2023, the amount of net revenues of the state budget amounted to 48,277 million euros, showing a small increase of 4 million euros compared to the target included for the corresponding period in the draft budget.

Tax revenues amounted to 44,982 million euros, increased by 3,156 million euros or 7.5% compared to the target.

Revenue returns totaled 4,985 million euros, up 561 million euros from the target (4,424 million euros).
