Feud between Syriza govt, mining multinational heats up

simmering feud between the Greek government and a Canadian mining multinational with a gold mining concession in northern Greece was revved up on Tuesday when the relevant energy minister accused the company’s CEO of deliberately “shorting” shares when he announced that a suspension of operations last January.

In statements to Bloomberg, Greek Energy Minister Panos Skourletis accused Eldorado Gold top executive Paul Wright  of “telling his friends” of the multinational’s plans to suspend mining at the Skouries site so that they could sell and buy-back at a lower price.

A company spokesperson replied that the quip was “utter nonsense” and defamatory.
