The latest opinion poll, published this week, shows the biggest difference between ruling SYRIZA party and its main rival, center-right New Democracy, with the latter fielding a 24-percentage point lead over the former.
The results were released by the firm Public Issue, part of its monthly Barometer opinion poll, and specifically for October 2016.
Specifically, ND is shown with 42 percent of respondents’ preferences, over the 18 percent given to leftist SYRIZA.
A socialist PASOK-led grouping, along with the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn party (Chryssi Avgi), is given 8 percent of respondents’ preferences, followed by the Communist Party (KKE) with 7.5 percent.
No other party or grouping is shown as receiving above the 3-percent mark needed to enter Parliament, i.e. 3 percent of the vote in a general election.
The undecided vote is tallied at 30 percent.
Former minister and ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis is considered as the most suitable for prime minister, with 42 percent of respondents’ preferences, ahead of current PM Alexis Tsipras, who garnered 21 percent of respondents ‘preferences. The answer «neither of the two» was picked by 35 percent of respondents.
The same firm, Public Issue, recently ended its long-time cooperation with SYRIZA’s affiliated daily newspaper, «Avgi», with the responsibility of the latter, and after another particularly negative set of results for the ruling party.
