Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday called the current situation in Greece “extremely critical” and again reiterated his demand for snap elections in the still recession-battered country.
He made the comments in front of reporters just prior to his closed-door meeting with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
“The only solution for the country to exit this political decadence which it finds itself is elections as soon as possible,” he said.
Mitsotakis had requested the meeting from Pavlopoulos, a one-time ND minister who now holds the ceremonial presidential post.
In an earlier statement, a ND spokesman was quoted by a local television station as saying that the meeting was requested by Mitsotakis because of an “ambient atmosphere of authoritarianism that is affecting (the country’s) democratic operation.”
The reform-minded Mitsotakis also expressed his “very deep concerns not only over the course of the economy but also the undermining of democratic institutions.”
In a response, the relevant government spokeswoman said the ND leader’s demand was “out of place and untimely.”
