«Shipping sector’s achievements are significant for the prosperity of all nations»

By Theodore Veniamis
Mr. Theodore Veniamis is the president of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS).

The achievements recorded over the decades by Greek shipping are significant, not only for Greece itself, but for Europe and the prosperity of all nations, as stated Theodore Veniamis, the president of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), in a message on the occasion of the Posidonia 2018 international shipping exhibition in June 2018.

The Greek-controlled commercial fleet continues to rank first in the world, representing roughly 20 percent of the global fleet, in terms of dwt capacity. In fact, 30 percent of the world’s tankers and 22 percent of the bulkers plying the world’s seaways are Greek owned or controlled, something that means that approximately half of the European Union’s maritime transportation capacity is Greek owned.

We are particularly proud of the fact that, even amid major challenges for the shipping industry and for Greece, that the Posidonia 2018 international shipping exhibition remains an unwavering institution, demonstrating its resilience, its commitment to offering high-quality services and in showcasing the dynamism of the shipping sector, and of our country.

Greek shipping’s achievements are also apparent from the way our trading partners around the world express their appreciation and respect for the Greek presence in the sector.

It is this traditional devotion to duty and credibility that the Greek shipping sector strives to maintain and honor. This is the heritage that Posidonia supports, itself comprising an established international institution of outstanding distinction.

Posidonia 2018 will soon open its doors to exhibitors and guests from around the world. This celebration of the shipping industry is a unique opportunity to present the latest technological advancements and other marine-related innovations, as well as an occasion to create new and lasting partnerships.

This is, undoubtedly, the most recognized international event for the global shipping industry, and we are particularly pleased that Greece has been the host of the Posidonia international exhibition since its inception.

The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), as the institutional representative of the Greek shipping community, will remain on the front line of efforts to create strong alliances and to consolidate fruitful cooperation by all interested parties, one aimed at adopting viable marine policies, to the benefit of international shipping, global trade and growth.
