The EU Defense Transformation Roadmap, published today by “N”, opens a new path for the European defense industry and will be at the center of the meeting scheduled for September 11, 2025 in Brussels between the leadership of the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and the competent European institutions.
It is a revolution in the entire defense structure, from administrative procedures to business fields, with the utilization of modern technologies and the emergence of those companies that can develop them.
Strategy and Targets
In particular, the Defence Transformation Roadmap is based on the White Paper for European Defence – Readiness 2030 of the European Commission and DG DEFIS (Defence Industry and Space) and aims to accelerate Europe’s transition to a global defence technology power. It is the intersection point between political and defence innovation, which will largely determine Europe’s technological dominance.
The reason is simple, technologies designed for the political sector often have applications in the defence sector, while innovations born for defence can also be exploited in the political economy. The main aim is interoperability, the use of big data, cryptography, cloud, new generation communications and the integration of cyber capabilities and artificial intelligence.
According to the paper, the Charter includes three goals. First: Establish the EU as a defence-tech powerhouse, to make Europe the leading centre for next-generation defence innovation, attracting global investment and talent. Second: Accelerate the integration of advanced technologies into EU military capabilities, i.e. to accelerate the adoption of emerging dual-use technologies, such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, autonomy, edge computing and digital infrastructures, while fostering a culture of experimentation in the defence sector.
Three: Create a more agile, resilient and innovation-driven EU defence ecosystem, to identify the main trends, challenges and lessons shaping the defence landscape, to propose a vision of transformation based on innovation to enhance the EU’s readiness. and its Member States and outline measures to create a dynamic ecosystem with speed, agility and advanced technologies at its core.
