The implementation of the investment plan of the Heracles cement company, a member of the Holcim group, for the creation of a carbon dioxide capture and storage unit began on Thursday with a ceremony held in the Milaki area of Aliveri, Evia.

The total investment amounts to 400 million euros and its goal is to reduce the CO2 emissions of the Heracles factory by 80%.

According to Dimitris Hanis, CEO of the Heracles Group, the new unit is one of the first cement plants in Europe with a near-zero carbon footprint. As he noted, “decarbonization is becoming a driver of growth while strengthening the competitiveness of European industry.”

On his part, Holcim CEO Miljan Gutovic emphasized that the investment is part of the group’s broader vision to boost innovation and sustainable development in the construction materials sector. “The Olympus project will lead to the production of 8 million tons of cement with zero emissions. This is a historic commitment by Holcim to Hercules and to the broader effort of industrial transformation in Europe,” he said.
