A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred early Thursday morning off the coast of Crete.
According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 06:19, was located 55 kilometers north northeast of Neapolis, Lasithi, and had a focal depth of 37 km.
The earthquake was felt on the island of Crete and in the Attica region.
According to sources, small-scale landslides have been recorded on the provincial road network.
The municipal authorities are in a state of heightened readiness.
Speaking to ERTnews, the president of Greece’s Earthquake Planning & Protection Organisation (OASP), Efthymios Lekkas, commented that it is positive that it had such a large focal depth. “This is important because we will probably not have a tsunami,” he noted.
On his part, the mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, speaking to Mega, stressed that the earthquake was very strong, but confirmed that there are no reports of damage. “We are on high alert,” he said.
