State Dept. praise for resigned Greek FM; presses for Prespa accord implementation

A US State Department official on Wednesday replied to a question by Greece’s state-run news agency regarding the same-day resignation of Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, expressing Washington’s appreciation for the latter’s contribution US-Greek ties and the provision Prespa accord to resolve the fYRoM “name issue”.

The official referred to Kotzias’ ” dedicated services”, while reiterating the State Department’s support for the agreement, signed the foreign ministers of Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) last June, and now up for ratification in both countries.

“The US strongly supports the agreement’s full implementation, which will allow ‘Macedonia’ to take its rightful place in NATO and the EU as the Republic of North Macedonia… We urge leaders to rise above partisan politics and seize this historic opportunity to secure a brighter future for the country,” the official was quoted as saying.
