Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras this week emphasized his government’s intent to work towards a more united Europe, rather than to politically divide the EU, referring to an initiative that will bring together several leaders of the Union’s southern members to the Greek capital on Friday for a mini summit.

In a clear bid to allay whatever criticism that such regional gatherings generate divisiveness in the Union, and in particular, the euro-zone, the leftist Greek prime minister pointed to the “pro-Europe” character of the summit, adding that the purpose is not aimed at redistributing political influence.
Tsipras also referred to efforts to formulate a “Mediterranean agenda” that will become part of the overall European agenda.
The leaders of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta will attend the summit.
