The southern Aegean region (Cyclades islands), Crete, the central Macedonia province in northern Greece, the greater Athens area (Attica prefecture) and the Ionian islands are, as expected, the biggest draws for foreign tourists to the country.
According to figures released this week by the Bank of Greece (BoG) for and processed by the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), these five regions attracted 82 percent of tourist arrivals to the country in 2016 – 28.4 million visitors in absolute terms. These five regions also accumulated 85 percent of overnight stays recorded in the country (190.4 million) and 88 percent of tourism-related revenues (12.7 billion euros).
