Ocean Rig purchases drillship ‘Cerrado’ for 65 mln euros

The Ocean Rig firm, controlled by the Giorgos Economou family, has purchased the drill ship “Cerrado” for 65 million euros.

The vessel was built in 2011 by Samsung Heavy Industries for 680 million euros and up until recently belonged to the Brazilian Grupo Schahin, which sought protection from creditors last April.

The vessel was renamed Ocean Rig Paros and despite the “bargain price” for its purchase will face a sector in deep recession, due to the rock bottom price of crude oil.

Three Ocean Rig contracts in 2016, in fact, were terminated: the platform Eirik Raude and the drillships Ocean Rig Olympia and Ocean Rig Apollo.
