The cost of connecting, by rail, six ports in northern Greece and Bulgaria, the Sea2Sea initiative, has been budgeted at 3.7 billion euros, with most of the projects on the Greek side, including a new rail line connecting the port city of Thessaloniki with the border city of Xanthi, further to the east.
According to reports, a feasibility study for the project – the rail line connecting Thessaloniki, Kavala, Alexandroupolis, Varna and Ruse – has been completed and is positive, with the next step being the establishment of a bi-national company.
The project is due to be presented to EU Commissioner Violeta Bulc over the coming period.
