The National Observatory of Athens’ Zeus system recorded more than 11,000 lightning strikes throughout Greece on Monday, up until 19.00 (17.00), including roughly 700 in the greater Athens area.
The Greek capital and surrounding areas were also inundated on Monday by hail storms, with rainfall reaching 30 mm within a few hours, according to the observatory’s Meteo service.
Golf ball-sized hail fell on much of the Greek capital, with certain areas appearing as snow covered.
