New extension of moratorium on foreclosures linked to NPLs expected

Another extension of a moratorium on the foreclosure of primary residences is expected to be included in a draft bill to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.

The proposed deferment continues to protect homeowners with outstanding mortgage loans, by also includes several categories of consumer, business and state-guaranteed borrowing, according to reports.

The previous extension ends on March 15, with the new deferment expected to last until April 15, 2016.

Finance ministry sources claimed, in reports circulated by the state-run news agency, that the approval of institutional creditors’ is not necessary for the new extension, given that a review of the Greek bailout program is pending.

Nevertheless, measures to deal with the increasingly acute problem of non-performing loans in the country looms as a standing creditors’ demand from the leftist Greek government.
