Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday, from Parliament’s podium, put the blame on the European Union for the ongoing refugee crisis that is encompassing much of southern Europe, charging that certain parties are not meeting their obligations and agreements.
He was referring to a hardened stance by several Balkan countries and Austria, who have prevented Afghan nationals from joining Syrian and Iraqi war refugees in a trek towards Europe.
Tsipras also called for the convening of a political leaders’ meeting on the issue ahead of a crucial EU-Turkey summit meeting on March 7 in order to achieve what he called a “national consensus”.
The Greek PM also said his government will demand a decision by the EU for the “obligatory and proportional participation by all EU countries in the resettlement of refugees.”
